TUCSON, Ariz. – U.S. Border Patrol agents’ swift response saved the life an illegal border crosser suffering heat related injuries in southern Arizona Monday.
Around 4:30 a.m., Tucson Sector agents patrolling near Three Points encountered a 25-year-old Mexican man attempting to wave down cars on the side of the road, looking for help. During initial assessment by arriving agents, he collapsed and became unresponsive.
One of the agents, a nationally certified emergency medical technician (EMT), rendered immediate medical aid to the unconscious man, which included several minutes of CPR.
The man was transported by ambulance to a local area hospital for definitive medical care.
All U.S. Border Patrol agents are trained first responders and are taught basic lifesaving maneuvers such as CPR. Tucson Sector’s more than 230 EMTs and dozens of paramedics can render immediate care in the field, as well as in route to advanced medical facilities, to individuals in critical, lifesaving need. Collaboration with other federal, tribal, state and local partners ensures that people lost or injured in southern Arizona’s remote, inhospitable areas are given the best possible chance for survival.
