Severe thunderstorms packing damaging winds, hail and a few tornadoes will hit parts of the South and southern mid-Atlantic on Friday.
Showers and storms are ongoing right now in portions of the Southeast from the same weather system that has sparked severe weather in other parts of the nation's southern tier since Wednesday. See this link for details on the damage those storms have caused.
Scattered pockets of wind damage have been reported across the region. One possible tornado may have touched down near Burnside, Kentucky where debris was tossed at a local race track. Another possible tornado caused building damage north of Durham, North Carolina.
Storms will intensify and increase in coverage through the day in the Southeast and southern mid-Atlantic.
Scattered severe storms are possible from western North Carolina and Virginia throughout the rest of the Carolinas, southern Virginia and south to northern Florida. Areas in parts of those states shaded in the darkest red on the map below have the greatest potential to see severe weather.
Damaging winds, large hail and a few tornadoes are all potential threats from any storms that turn severe. Strong winds may continue even as storms move away.
