Southern Oregon’s Bootleg fire grows to nearly 300,000 acres

Critical fire weather conditions on Saturday pushed the Bootleg fire in southern Oregon east and north, burning 298,662 acres as of Sunday morning.

The wildfire is 22% contained, rising from 7% containment since Friday.

The fire is currently growing to the east. Fire crews established a fire line with bulldozers, as well as burnout — setting fire inside the line to widen it or burn fuel between the line and the edge of the fire.

This comes after the National Weather Service issued a “red flag warning” Friday afternoon for the Klamath Basin and Fremont-Winema National Forest, which indicates critical fire weather conditions or weather conditions that may cause fires.

The fire started July 6 northeast of Klamath Falls and threatened more than 5,000 structures, fire officials said.

Crews were working Sunday to add a direct fire line adjacent to the fire’s edge and contingency lines, clearing out vegetation in anticipation of the fire spreading toward the communities of Paisley, Summer Lake and Silver Lake north of the fire.

Additional evacuation levels are now in effect in Lake County.

Snake River Complex fire: This fire comprises the Shovel Creek, Captain John Creek and Hoover Ridge fires, all started by lightning and discovered July 7. It is estimated at 103,907 acres on the Oregon-Idaho border and was 44% contained as of Sunday morning.

Jack fire: The wildfire along Oregon 138 east of Roseburg in Douglas County is estimated at 16,764 acres and is 35% contained. The focus Sunday for fire crews was reducing the chance of the fire moving past containment lines by securing fire lines.

Elbow Creek fire: The fire, 30 miles southeast of Walla Walla, Washington, is estimated at 10,941 acres and was 10% contained as of Sunday morning.

Grandview fire: The fire 10 miles northeast of Sisters is estimated at 6,032 acres and was 43% contained as of Sunday morning.

Darlene fire: The fire near La Pine remains estimated at 686 acres and was 61% contained as of Sunday morning.

Bruler fire: This fire about 8 miles south of Detroit Lake is estimated at 156 acres, where it has remained over the past few days, and was 10% contained as of Sunday morning.
