Evacuations lifted, I-80 reopens after crews gain control of Dutch Fire

Evacuations lifted, I-80 reopens after crews gain control of Dutch Fire
THIS FIRE, BUT NOW WE’RE GOING TO GET BACK TO THE DUTCH FIRE, WHICH STARTED ABOUT 1:00 THIS AFTERNOON NEAR DUTCH FLOOD. AND THIS IS IT’S NOT THAT FAR. IT’S ONLY A FEW MILES FROM THE MOSQUITO ROAD FIRE. IT SPARKED IN VEGETATION ALONG INTERSTATE 80, AGAIN, JUST BEFORE 1:00 THIS AFTERNOON AND CLOSED DOWN TRAFFIC ON WESTBOUND 80 AND THAT AREA. YES, IT DID JUST ADD ONE MORE FOR FIREFIGHTERS TO TRY AND DEAL WITH KCRA 3. LEANN DAN HERE JUST ARRIVED AT THE DUTCH FIRE AND WE AND WE’VE BEEN FOCUSING SO HEAVILY ON THE MOSQUITO FIRE. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE DUTCH FIRE AND THE FIREFIGHTING EFFORTS. WELL, I’LL TELL YOU THIS. I JUST SPOKE TO SOMEONE FROM CAL FIRE AND HE SAID THIS SITUATION IS NOT WHAT THEY ARE SEEING WITH THE MOSQUITO FIRE. THIS, AGAIN, ANOTHER FIRE THAT FIRE CREWS ARE HAVING TO DEAL WITH THIS AFTERNOON. YOU CAN SEE IT’S QUITE ACTIVE. WE’RE ACTUALLY ON THE INTERSTATE RIGHT NOW. BOTH SIDES OF 80 ARE CLOSED. SO WE ARE STANDING IN, WHAT, NORMALLY A NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCE IS WOULD BE THE WESTBOUND LANE OF I-80. AND YOU CAN SEE CAL FIRE CREWS ARE HERE AND THEY’RE WORKING RIGHT UP TO THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE. WE’VE GOT SEVERAL CREW MEMBERS HERE AND IF JIMMIE WANTS TO GO UP JUST A LITTLE BIT UP THIS HILL, YOU CAN SEE THERE ARE FLAMES BURNING JUST RIGHT ALONGSIDE THE HIGHWAY. SOMEONE FROM CAL FIRE THAT WE SPOKE WITH A FEW MINUTES AGO, HE SAID THAT THIS IS GENERALLY AS FAR NORTH AS THE FIRE IS GOING. SO THIS KIND OF WHERE WE’RE STANDING RIGHT NOW IS, IN HIS WORDS, SORT OF THE STOPPING POINT FOR WHERE THEY ARE WORKING, SOMETHING THAT THEY’RE PAYING REALLY CLOSE ATTENTION TO, HE SAID, IS MAKING SURE THAT THAT FIRE DOESN’T JUMP TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE. BUT AS YOU CAN SEE RIGHT NOW, THE INTERSTATE IS CLOSED DOWN AS THEY ARE WORKING TO GET THIS FIRE, THE DUTCH FIRE, UNDER CONTROL. AND YOU CAN REALLY JUST SEE HOW CLOSELY IT’S BURNING RIGHT UP TO THE INTERSTATE. WE KNOW THAT EVACUATION ORDERS HAVE BEEN PUT IN PLACE FOR THIS FIRE BURNING IN PLACER COUNTY, MONTE VISTA EXIT RIDGE ROAD ACROSS TO MURRAY RANCH AND ALSO FORESTRY. THOSE ARE SOME OF THE AREAS THAT ARE EVACUATED RIGHT NOW. I’LL TELL YOU THIS, WHEN WE WERE TRYING TO GET HERE, INTERSTATE 80 WAS A MESS, JUST TRAFFIC BACKED UP AS PEOPLE WERE TRYING TO GET OUT OF THIS AREA. AND THIS IS SORT OF AN EXAMPLE IN WHY THAT WAS. AS YOU CAN SEE, THE INTERSTATE COMPLETELY CLOSED DOWN. IT’S VERY SMOKY HERE. I GUESS, THOUGH, TODAY, SMOKY IS QUITE RELATIVE. AGAIN, THIS IS THE DUTCH FIRE BURNING IN PLACER COUNTY. WE’VE GOT THE HELICOPTER OVERHEAD AND JUST BELOW WHERE THAT HELICOPTER IS, YOU CAN SEE THE PINK ON THE GROUND WHERE THEY HAD DROPPED RETARDANT EARLIER. THEY’RE ACTUALLY WORKING TO GET THAT CLEANED UP RIGHT NOW. THERE’S A STREET SWEEPER WORKING AGAIN TO GET THAT CLEANED UP. SO RIGHT NOW, THIS IS WHAT WE’RE SEEING ALONG INTERSTATE 80. FIRE STILL BURNING. CREWS ARE STILL HERE, STILL WORKING TO GET THIS FIGURED OUT. WE ARE HOPING TO GET AN UPDATE ON THE INTERSTATE AND WHEN IT MIGHT GET BACK OPEN. BUT RIGHT NOW, THIS FIRE IS 0% CONTAINED WOLF. AND THEN I’M BACK TO YOU FOR NOW. WHEN WE SEE THE THREE FIREFIGHTERS BEHIND YOU. WE KNOW CALTRANS BEEN TALKING ABOUT A LOT OF CONTROLLED BURNS TO TRY AND CONTROL THIS. SO THEY’RE NOT JUST WATCHING THE FIRE. THOSE GUYS ARE KIND OF THERE. THAT’S THEIR JOB RIGHT NOW BECAUSE MANY OF THOSE FIRES THAT WE SEE BEHIND YOU, THOSE ARE THOSE ARE CONTROLLED BURNS. RIGHT. YEAH, THAT’S OUR UNDERSTANDING. AND WE’VE SEEN THESE HAND CREWS WORKING AND THEY’RE JUST REALLY SCALING THEIR WAY UP THIS RATHER STEEP HILL. GOSH, WE’VE HEARD A LOT ABOUT JUST HOW CHALLENGING THE TERRAIN IN THIS GENERAL AREA IS FOR FIRE CREWS. SO WE SEE THE HOSE THAT’S RUNNING UP THERE AND WE HAVE FIREFIGHTERS WHO ARE UP JUST SORT OF IN THIS BRUSH WORKING TO GET THIS FIRE OUT. AND AGAIN, JUST THE GOAL IS TO MAKE SURE THAT IT DOES NOT CROSS OVER THE INTERSTATE. WE’RE GOING TO GO AHEAD AND SCOOT A LITTLE BIT CLOSER TO THE WALL HERE AS TRAFFIC IS STARTING TO PICK UP. AL
