FEMA, National Hurricane Center meet with President Joe Biden in Florida

FEMA, National Hurricane Center meet with President Joe Biden in Florida
ABOUT 15 MINUTES, I CAN’T THANK YOU. RIGHT NOW, WE ARE JUST HOURS FROM THE OFFICIAL START OF HURRICANE SEASON. TODAY, LEADERS WITH FEMA JOINED FORCES WITH THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER. THEY WANT TO DISCUSS WHERE WE STAND HEADING INTO THE SEASON. METEOROLOGIST ERIC BURNS HERE WITH US NOW AND ERIC, YOU FOLLOWED ALONG. SO WHAT DID THEY HAVE TO SAY? IT’S ALL ABOUT PREPAREDNESS, RIGHT? THAT IS THE BOTTOM LINE IS TO PREPARE. AS FLORIDA IS STILL DUSTING OFF FROM LAST YEAR, THE BEACHES STILL SCRAPED UP AND NOW WE HAVE TO START PREPARING TO DO THIS ALL OVER AGAIN. IT WAS TODAY THAT FEMA TEAMED UP WITH LEADERS AT THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER DOWN IN MIAMI TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYONE IS ON THE SAME PAGE HEADING INTO THE SEASON. BEFORE CHATTING, THEY EVEN BRIEF THE PRESIDENT ON THE STATE OF AFFAIRS AFTER WORD OFFICIALS CHATTED WITH US AND ALL MEDIA OUTLETS AROUND THE COUNTRY ABOUT THE SEASON AHEAD AND WHAT THEY’RE DOING TO TRY AND SERVE US BETTER. THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER DIRECTOR, MIKE BRENNAN, DISCUSSED THE THREATS FROM A STORM. EACH HAVING THEIR OWN PERSONALITY AND HOW WE JUST CAN’T FOCUS SOLELY ON THE CONE. THINK ABOUT THIS. THE HAZARDS OF THE STORM ARE WHAT KILLED PEOPLE. THE TRACK OF THE CENTER OF THE STORM, THE CATEGORY, THE NAME OF THE STORM, WHETHER IT’S A TROPICAL STORM OR HURRICANE, THAT’S NOT WHAT KILLS PEOPLE. AND TO ME, THAT ALONE SPEAKS VOLUMES. RIGHT? THAT’S WHY EACH STORM HAS TO BE LOOKED AT, DISCUSSED FOR WHAT IT WILL BRING AND DO TO EACH INDIVIDUAL LOCATION. AND HERE AT WESH 2, IT’S WHY WE COVER EACH STORM THE WAY THAT WE DO. DIRECTOR BRENNAN ALSO TOUTED NEW MODEL DATA THAT HAS ALLOWED THEM TO REALLY HONE IN ON THEIR INTENSITY FORECASTING AND STORM SURGE FORECASTING. TWO OF THE MOST CRITICAL AREAS, BUT TWO AREAS THAT THEY’VE STRUGGLED TO IMPROVE ON UNTIL RECENT YEARS. THAT SAID, GOING FORWARD, FEMA ALSO TALKED TO US TODAY DISCUSSING HOW THEY’RE WORKING FORWARD, LEARNING FROM IAN AND NICOLE TO BRING SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITIES HARDEST HIT TO THE COMMUNITIES SO THAT THE FOLKS DON’T HAVE TO WORK HARDER TO GET SUPPORT. THEY WANT TO CONTINUE TO BE VERY PROACTIVE SO THAT AFTER A STORM
