Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero delivers a speech at Government House in Agana Heights on March 31, 2023. President Biden has approved the governor’s request for individual assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Guam residents affected by Typhoon Mawar will be able to apply for individual assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Joint Information Center announced Monday.

Under the individual assistance program, FEMA provides grants for homeowners and renters to cover rental assistance and provide money for home repairs.

FEMA inspectors will perform home-by-home assessments to initiate the process to provide direct relief.

According to the FEMA website, individual assistance includes services for households with uninsured or underinsured necessary expenses and serious needs.

While it doesn’t compensate for all losses from a disaster, it helps people meet basic needs and supplement disaster recovery efforts.

“We are appreciative of the work we’ve already accomplished with our territorial and federal partners and I’m happy to announce that more relief is on the way,” Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero said in an announcement. “As our community continues making progress towards recovery in the wake of Typhoon Mawar, I’ve been assured that Guam will be provided with every necessary resource for a complete and speedy recovery.”

FEMA Federal Coordination Officer Bern Ruiz said residents who suffered damages to their home as a result of the storm should contact FEMA to register.

You can register with FEMA by calling 800-621-3362, through the website at disasterassistance.gov or by using the FEMA app.

This was my 3rd super typhoon and our leaders then and now failed us. My lights at home goes off now now than 1962. GPA have been preaching first class improvement and this is what we get……1962 linemen’s climb power poles to fix damages. Today they ride up to the problem with low grade output. Comm technologies is a scam here on our island. High rates with poor qualities. Where are the emergency equipments for this situation? There should be a book that details job responsibilities to all key agencies in our government.
