Description David Giaretta (david@giaretta.org) 2020-07-01 10:02:32 UTC
To first paragraph of section 1.2, which states:
The OAIS model in this document may be applicable to any Archive. It is specifically applicable to organizations, which may themselves be part of larger organizations, with the responsibility of making information available for the Long Term. This includes organizations with other responsibilities, such as receiving, processing and distribution in response to programmatic needs.

APPEND THE FOLLOWING
Organizations may require their information, from the start, to be re-processable to enable the results created by others to be reproduced, interoperable with other information, and re-used in new ways. Such organizations will find this document relevant because of the requirement that, to be preserved, the information must be understandable and usable.

It would be good to add a sentence to the existing paragraph, right after the sentence that ends 'Long Term,'with a sentence that indicates the OAIS definition of Long Term.
Comment 2 Eld Zierau (elzi@kb.dk) 2021-02-24 06:48:05 UTC
I think it is a bit much to add about reuse, which is inherited in long term preservation - as I understand Marks comments, it could instead be pointed out by "with a sentence that indicates the OAIS definition of Long Term." - which I will agree to.

I still think it would be worthwhile to mention re-use etc even though, and perhaps especially, because it underpins the OAIS definition of preservation.
Comment 4 Mark Conrad (mark.conrad.iso@gmail.com) 2021-03-08 16:59:57 UTC
I think the OAIS standard already has so much text about possible/exceptional uses of the standard to make the document almost unreadable. I would not favor adding the additional text. In fact, I would suggest removing, "This includes organizations with other responsibilities, such as receiving, processing and distribution in response to programmatic needs." The first sentence says the standard is applicable to any Archive. We don't need to mention all the possible types of archives it might be applicable to.
Comment 5 David Giaretta (david@giaretta.org) 2021-03-22 17:43:21 UTC
Putting things together :
a) instead of copying all the text with the definition of Long Term, make it clear we are using the definition in the terminology section.
b) I still think it is important to add text about re-use, and to keep the possible uses of the standard
