FEMA to provide temporary housing for Western NC after congressman makes request
RALEIGH, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - FEMA announced it is providing temporary housing options to meet the needs of North Carolinians in the aftermath of Helene after North Carolina Congressman Chuck Edwards (NC-11) makes request to White House.
Congressman Edwards called on the agency to provide temporary shelter for Western North Carolina residents in a timely manner as the cold weather is slowly approaching.
“With winter approaching, time is of the essence and Western North Carolina cannot afford for FEMA to take as long as it did with Louisiana and Maui for citizens to get the temporary housing that they need. I am calling on the White House to help obtain temporary housing for folks in our mountains and will not stop pressing this issue until this basic need is met.”
According to the congressman, there are currently 2,581 familes displaced by Helene. The counties in Western North Carolinas requested 1,180 FEMA trailers.
The agency released the following statement:
“FEMA is providing multiple temporary housing options to meet North Carolina disaster survivors' individual needs. More than 3,700 households are checked into Transitional Sheltering Assistance hotels and motels paid by FEMA. FEMA has Transportable Temporary Housing Units in North Carolina and we continue to work with our state and local partners to assess the needs of eligible applicants. The housing plan will contain several options to include direct lease and multifamily lease programs, which allow families to be placed quickly into rental units paid by FEMA.”
