Neuroergonomics for Healthcare

IEEE-SMC 2023 Workshop

This workshop of IEEE-SMC 2023 is organised by Giacinto Barresi - Researcher at the Rehab Technologies Lab of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (Italy) - and Giancarlo Fortino - Full Professor at the Department of Informatics, Modeling, Electronics and Systems of Università della Calabria (Italy). 
The workshop is supported by the IEEE-SMC Technical Committee in Interactive and Wearable Computing And Devices, and by ENACT (Employing Neuroergonomic solutions to Attenuate the Cerebellar Tremor), a project of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) and Fondazione Italiana Sclerosi Multipla (FISM) with its association (AISM), and by the RAISE ecosystem for innovation in Liguria Region (supported by the PNRR national project).

The Workshop aims to explore challenges and solutions in collecting and analyzing biosignals and movements as data for modeling the users of medical devices, considering (obviously) the perspectives of both patients and clinicians. It emphasizes the potential role of neuroergonomics, a discipline employing neuroscientific methods to study and enhance interactions between humans and systems for improving the well-being of the first and the performance of the second (considering how people are part of the systems we refer to). For example, neuroergonomics can facilitate the implementation of neuroadaptive features in smart devices, enabling personalized and adaptive services of precision medicine. Integrating wearable and environmental sensors into computational infrastructures also allows clinicians to use real-life data for getting advantage of robotic and digital aids. However, analyzing data in complex, real-world contexts requires an interdisciplinary multi-level perspective, pondering various domains and approaches to modeling individuals who rely on medical devices and systems. Neuroergonomics offers a framework that combines neuroscience and human factors to address these challenges, providing a unique perspective to human-centered design and evaluation of medical solutions. 

Accordingly, this workshop of the IEEE-SMC 2023 conference will discuss these issues thanks to contributions of experts in ergonomics, psychology, neuroscience, neuroengineering, biomedical technologies, computer science, computer engineering, systems engineering, robotics, artificial intelligence, human-machine interaction, and human-centered design. Their talks and their participation, with the audience, in a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) Analysis of anthropomorphic robotic systems will offer the community of IEEE-SMC 2023 an opportunity for understanding why the user's neurocognitive can play a fundamental role to achieve human-centered innovations in healthcare.
